Epicoccum blight of wheat is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Epicoccum tritici. This fungus is typically considered a saprophyte or a weak parasite that exploits weakened or aging plant tissues. It is commonly found in grain fields during the maturation stage, manifesting as dark, superficial growth on various parts of the wheat plant.

The primary host crops affected by this fungus are bread wheat and durum wheat. Other small grains, such as barley and oats, can also host the pathogen. Epicoccum tritici often colonizes tissues already compromised by previous infections, frost damage, or physical wounding from insect pests, thereby worsening the overall condition of the crop.

Symptoms of the disease include distinct dark discoloration on glumes, stems, and sometimes leaves. The development of a dense, dark-colored mass of spores gives the infected areas a sooty appearance. When the grain head is severely infected, the kernels may exhibit discoloration, shriveling, and significant reductions in weight, germination rates, and milling quality.

The development and spread of Epicoccum tritici are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Periods of high relative humidity (above 85%) accompanied by moderate temperatures during the grain-filling phase are conducive to rapid fungal colonization. Frequent rainfall just before harvest is a major driver of widespread infection outbreaks.

Economic damage is caused by the deterioration of grain quality and potential contamination with metabolites. Effective disease management and prophylaxis include:

  • Implementing crop rotation to reduce the primary inoculum load.
  • Deep plowing to bury crop residues that host the pathogen.
  • Using appropriate fungicide treatments during the heading and flowering stages if high humidity persists.
  • Selecting wheat varieties with good straw strength and resistance to early senescence.
  • Ensuring timely harvesting during dry weather to prevent moisture-induced infection in the field.
