Description
Epipyxis is a genus of golden-brown algae (Chrysophyceae) that can cause significant biological stress in aquaculture, greenhouses, and ornamental water gardens. While not a traditional parasitic plant disease, its excessive growth acts as a severe limiting factor for the health and development of aquatic flora by disrupting the ecological balance of the water medium.
The causative agent consists of microscopic cells that produce loricae (protective cases). Under favorable conditions, these organisms bloom, creating a thick, brownish layer on submerged surfaces. This layer is not just an aesthetic issue; it physically impedes the physiological processes of higher plants by blocking light penetration and interfering with gas exchange at the leaf surface.
Symptoms of an Epipyxis outbreak include a distinct golden-yellow or brown film on aquatic vegetation and container walls. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf discoloration, and general vitality decline. In advanced stages, the water itself may take on a cloudy, yellowish tint, indicating high concentrations of algal biomass and depleted nutrient levels.
Propagation is favored by high nutrient availability, particularly phosphate and nitrate surpluses, along with low flow conditions and sufficient light levels. Epipyxis tends to thrive in environments where nutrient cycling is unbalanced, making it a common problem in managed systems that lack proper filtration or biological competition from beneficial aquatic plants.
Effective management and protection strategies include a combination of preventive and corrective actions:
- Implementation of robust filtration systems, including UV sterilization to disrupt algal life cycles.
- Strict management of fertilizer dosing to prevent nutrient spikes in the water column.
- Manual removal of algal films to reduce the inoculum load within the system.
- Optimization of water circulation and aeration to create conditions less conducive to algal settling.
