Description

The causative agent of powdery mildew is the ascomycete fungus known as Erysiphe communis. As an obligate parasite, it develops primarily on the external surfaces of host plants, creating a distinctive white, dust-like mycelial network that covers leaves, stems, and sometimes floral structures.

This pathogen has a broad host range, primarily affecting legumes such as peas, clover, and alfalfa, as well as various vegetable and ornamental plants. Due to its ability to spread rapidly via wind-dispersed conidia, it poses a recurring challenge to agricultural and horticultural production worldwide.

Symptomatology starts with isolated white spots on foliage, which eventually coalesce into a dense, powdery fungal mat. As the infection progresses, infected leaves may become chlorotic, curl, and suffer from necrosis. Towards the end of the growing season, small black sexual fruiting bodies, known as cleistothecia, appear within the white mycelium.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemic development of Erysiphe communis. The disease thrives in warm, humid weather, with frequent temperature fluctuations between day and night being especially conducive to spore germination and colonization of host plant tissues.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it severely impairs the host plant's physiological functions, specifically photosynthesis and transpiration. This leads to stunted growth, reduced biomass, and lower yields. Furthermore, the aesthetic quality of ornamental plants is completely compromised by the characteristic fungal coating.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach:

  • cultivation of resistant or tolerant plant varieties;
  • proper plant spacing to improve air circulation;
  • removal and destruction of crop residues where the pathogen overwinters;
  • timely application of fungicides, such as sulfur-based products or triazoles, when initial symptoms are observed.
