Euglena (specifically Euglena viridis) is a photosynthetic flagellate that, while not a plant pathogen in the traditional sense, acts as a biological contaminant in agricultural water systems. In professional agronomy, its presence is recognized as an indicator of water quality degradation and a threat to hydroponic production.
The organism primarily affects crops grown in hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic systems. Because it thrives in nutrient-rich solutions, it can rapidly colonize irrigation reservoirs, pipes, and growing channels, directly interacting with the root zone of the target crops.
Symptoms of an infestation are highly visible: the nutrient solution turns a distinct bright green, and a slimy, algae-like film develops on the interior of tanks and irrigation emitters. This biomass creates a physical barrier on the roots, significantly reducing their ability to absorb nutrients and oxygen.
Development and spread are triggered by exposure to direct sunlight, elevated water temperatures (exceeding 20°C), and high concentrations of inorganic minerals. Even small amounts of light entering an unfiltered nutrient reservoir can lead to exponential growth of Euglena populations within a few days.
The harmfulness of this organism lies in its metabolic activity. Euglena consumes dissolved oxygen, causing root hypoxia, and releases organic metabolites that can shift the pH balance of the nutrient solution. These conditions favor the secondary colonization of opportunistic pathogens that lead to root rot and severe plant stress.
Preventive measures and control strategies include:
- Completely blocking sunlight from all nutrient reservoirs and delivery pipes.
- Installing high-efficiency UV sterilization lamps in the water recirculation circuit.
- Maintaining strict water hygiene by monitoring and managing dissolved mineral concentrations.
- Regularly cleaning the system with hydrogen peroxide to eliminate biofilm accumulation.
