Euglena gracilis is a unicellular flagellate that is often considered an undesirable agent in controlled-environment agriculture and hydroponics. It acts as an opportunistic competitor that degrades the quality of nutrient solutions, leading to what is commonly referred to as the blooming of water in industrial growing systems.

This organism primarily affects soil-less cultivation setups, including deep water culture, NFT systems, and aeroponics. By rapidly proliferating in mineral-rich environments, it can outcompete plants for essential resources and alter the chemical balance of the irrigation water provided to crops.

Symptoms of infestation include a vibrant green tint in the nutrient tank, the formation of a slimy biofilm on irrigation lines and root surfaces, and a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels. This oxygen depletion is the most dangerous consequence, as it restricts root respiration and leads to reduced plant vigor.

The conditions favorable for the proliferation of Euglena gracilis include strong light exposure (both sunlight and artificial), warm water temperatures, and elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Its unique mixotrophic ability allows it to thrive even in varying environmental conditions within greenhouse operations.

Effective management strategies center on prevention, specifically by ensuring complete light exclusion in reservoirs and piping. Growers should implement UV sterilization, maintain regular tank cleaning schedules, and utilize peroxide-based disinfectants to prevent recurrent blooms and ensure optimal nutrient availability for the target crops.
