Euglenaceae are a family of unicellular flagellates that, while not traditional plant pathogens, act as a significant nuisance in agricultural systems, particularly in hydroponics and nursery environments. Their rapid proliferation can drastically alter the rhizosphere conditions, negatively impacting plant vigor and nutrient uptake efficiency.

These organisms primarily affect greenhouse crops, including lettuce, tomatoes, and various ornamental seedlings. The presence of these flagellates is most common in systems where there is an excess of light, warmth, and dissolved organic or inorganic nutrients, which are required for their photosynthetic growth.

Symptoms of an Euglenaceae bloom typically include the formation of a vibrant green or rusty-brown slime layer on the surface of the soil or hydroponic solution. This layer acts as an impermeable barrier that restricts oxygen exchange between the air and the roots, leading to root suffocation, reduced transpiration, and stunted plant development.

Favorable conditions for their development involve high light intensity, warm temperatures, and high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the irrigation water. In hydroponic setups, inadequate light-proofing of reservoirs or pipes is the most common cause of contamination and the subsequent rapid colonization of the system by these organisms.

Preventative measures include blocking all light from entering nutrient reservoirs and maintaining strict hygiene standards for all irrigation equipment. If an infestation occurs, it is recommended to drain the system, sanitize all components using approved horticultural disinfectants, and adjust the nutrient composition to prevent future rapid regrowth.
