Description

Euglenozoa are a diverse group of flagellated protozoa, including specialized plant-parasitic species such as those in the genus Phytomonas. These organisms are recognized as significant, though sometimes overlooked, pathogens capable of infecting the vascular tissues of various economically important plants.

The pathogen is characterized by its ability to colonize the phloem and laticiferous vessels of its host. Unlike typical fungi or bacteria, these protozoans exist as intracellular or extracellular parasites within the plant, disrupting fluid transport and sequestering nutrients from the plant’s internal transport system.

These parasites primarily affect tropical and subtropical crops, including coconut palms, coffee plants, various spurges, and occasionally horticultural crops like tomatoes. The spread of the infection is heavily dependent on specific insect vectors, such as hemipteran bugs, which transmit the pathogen during feeding.

Common symptoms include systemic wilting, vascular necrosis, discoloration of foliage, and fruit deformity. The disease often progresses slowly, making early detection difficult; however, as the pathogen population grows, it can cause severe stunting, dieback, and eventually the death of the infected plant tissue.
