From an agronomic perspective, it is characterized as a wood-decaying saprotroph that targets the wood of coniferous trees, acting as a secondary pathogen that often colonizes stressed or decaying plant tissues.

The host range primarily includes species of the Pinaceae family, with a notable preference for pine trees. It is frequently observed on deadwood, fallen branches, and the trunks of weakened trees where the bark has been breached by insects, wind damage, or mechanical injuries, allowing the fungus to access the inner sapwood.

Symptoms of the fungus are distinct: it forms gelatinous, undulating fruit bodies that appear brownish-red to amber in color when wet, resembling drops of resin or jelly. During dry spells, these fruit bodies shrink dramatically, transforming into a dark, brittle, and crust-like layer that is difficult to distinguish from the bark of the host tree.
