Description

The causative agent of this disease is the basidiomycete fungus Exobasidium burtii. This pathogen is a specialized parasite that targets plants within the Ericaceae family, causing structural abnormalities and pigmentation changes in plant tissues. It is classified as an obligate biotroph that interferes with the plant's hormonal balance.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Azalea (Rhododendron). While it can occur in garden landscapes, it is particularly problematic in greenhouses and commercial nurseries where environmental conditions are artificially controlled. Young, succulent tissues are the most susceptible to infection during the spring growth flush.

Symptoms typically begin as light green or yellowish spots on emerging leaves. As the infection progresses, these areas become thickened, fleshy, and distorted. A characteristic white or pale-yellow waxy bloom forms on the surface, which contains the spores of the fungus. Eventually, affected leaves turn brown, shrivel, and drop prematurely.

The development of Exobasidium burtii is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, frequent rain, or overhead irrigation. Spores are easily disseminated by splashing water and wind. Cool to moderate temperatures are ideal for the rapid spread of the fungus throughout a plant population.

The disease causes significant aesthetic damage, reducing the market value of ornamental azaleas and weakening the plants' overall health. Management strategies focus on sanitation, such as pruning and destroying infected tissues before spores are released. Preventive measures include:

  • Improving air circulation to reduce leaf wetness.
  • Avoiding overhead watering practices.
  • Applying fungicides during early spring before buds open.
  • Maintaining proper spacing between plants to decrease humidity.
