Exposed ear tips in corn is a physiological disorder driven by extreme drought and thermal stress rather than a biological pathogen. It represents a defensive mechanism where the plant sacrifices the reproductive potential at the tip of the ear to prioritize resource allocation to the base of the cob and ensure survival under severe environmental limitations.

This disorder exclusively affects maize crops. It is most prevalent in modern, high-yielding hybrids that have high metabolic requirements during the critical reproductive stages. When transpiration rates exceed water uptake from the soil, the plant inevitably experiences a supply-demand mismatch during the pollination or early grain-fill stages.

The visual symptoms are distinct: the husk leaves retract or fail to elongate, leaving the tip of the cob exposed to the elements. This is often accompanied by missing or shriveled kernels at the distal end of the ear, as the silks corresponding to those ovules failed to receive pollen or were aborted due to the extreme heat and water stress.

Environmental conditions conducive to this disorder include prolonged periods of hot, dry weather during the VT (tasseling) and R1 (silking) growth stages. These conditions cause the silks to dry out prematurely, preventing them from capturing pollen, and lead the plant to truncate the ear development process to conserve physiological resources.

The economic impact is significant, as it leads to reduced kernel count per ear and lower overall grain yield. Furthermore, the exposed tips lack the natural physical protection provided by the husks, making them highly susceptible to secondary attacks by insects, such as corn earworms, and subsequent colonization by ear-rotting fungi like Aspergillus or Fusarium.

Effective mitigation requires an integrated agronomic approach. Growers should prioritize the selection of hybrids with strong drought tolerance and balanced silking-pollen shed intervals. Improving soil health to increase water-holding capacity, optimizing plant population density to reduce competition for moisture, and applying irrigation during critical growth stages are essential preventive practices.
