Extreme drought is classified in agricultural science as a severe abiotic stressor that functions as a primary cause of plant morbidity. While it is not a biological pathogen, its devastating effect on crop development is comparable to or greater than that of major infectious diseases. It involves a prolonged period of moisture deficiency, leading to severe physiological dysfunction in cultivated plants.

The biology of the impact relates to the breakdown of water transport and gas exchange systems within the plant. As soil moisture levels drop, the root system fails to uptake necessary minerals, and the transpiration process ceases as a defense mechanism, leading to the closure of stomata. This interrupts photosynthesis, causing the plant to prioritize survival over growth, which effectively halts yield formation.

Extreme drought impacts a wide variety of crops, specifically targeting those in critical phenological stages like flowering or grain-filling. Damage includes severe wilting, chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and in extreme cases, permanent cellular collapse. Secondary effects often involve opportunistic colonization by weakened pathogens, as the plant’s internal defense system is compromised.

Conditions for development are defined by hydrological patterns, prolonged heat waves, and low relative humidity. Soil structure plays a pivotal role; degraded soils with low organic matter content lose moisture faster, exacerbating the impact of drought. Spatial distribution is broad, affecting both irrigated and rain-fed agriculture when meteorological thresholds are surpassed.

Control and mitigation measures require a holistic agronomic approach. Key strategies include the selection of drought-tolerant genotypes, the implementation of conservative tillage practices to maintain moisture, and the application of biostimulants that promote root growth. Furthermore, precision irrigation systems and the preservation of cover crops serve as essential tools to buffer against the impacts of extreme aridity.
