Description
The Fenestellaceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi that often act as pathogens on woody plants. These fungi are typically associated with bark necrosis and canker diseases, playing a significant role in the degradation of bark and underlying cambium tissue in various tree species.
The primary disease type caused by these organisms is cortical necrosis. The pathogen infects plants through wounds, including pruning cuts, winter frost cracks, or mechanical damage caused by tools. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the bark, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients within the branches.
These fungi predominantly affect deciduous trees, particularly fruit-bearing species and ornamental shrubs. Trees that are already stressed due to poor soil conditions, drought, or extreme cold are highly susceptible to colonization, as their natural defense mechanisms are weakened.
Clinical symptoms include the discoloration of the bark, which turns brown or black, followed by the appearance of depressed lesions. Over time, the bark may crack or peel away, and characteristic black, pimple-like fruiting bodies (stromata) appear on the surface, signifying the production of reproductive spores.
