Description
Phytoplasmosis refers to a category of plant diseases caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized wall-less bacteria. These pathogens specifically colonize the plant phloem tissue, where they thrive by exploiting the host's nutritional resources, ultimately leading to systemic physiological disruption and severe plant decline.
A broad range of plant species is susceptible to phytoplasmosis, including staple crops like potatoes, tomatoes, grapevines, and various ornamental trees. Because these pathogens interfere with systemic transport within the plant, they can cause dramatic changes in plant architecture, growth patterns, and reproductive development.
Common symptoms include leaf yellowing (chlorosis), reddening, and significant dwarfing of the plant. A hallmark sign is the development of abnormal, dense vegetative growths known as "witches' brooms," as well as the transformation of floral parts into vegetative structures, which essentially renders the plant sterile and prevents any fruit production.
Transmission occurs exclusively via insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. When these insects feed on the phloem of an infected plant, they ingest the phytoplasma, which then circulates through the insect's body. Once the insect is infectious, it transmits the pathogen to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions, leading to localized epidemics.
Management of phytoplasmosis is challenging because once a plant is infected, it cannot be cured. Control efforts must be strictly preventative, focusing on controlling the insect vector population, eliminating weed hosts that serve as reservoirs for the pathogen, and ensuring that only certified, pathogen-free propagation material is introduced into cultivation fields.
