Description

Flavoparmelia is a genus of foliose lichens often found on the bark of trees and shrubs. In an agronomic context, it is not a plant disease in the sense of a pathogen infecting the host, but rather an epiphyte. It uses the tree as a structural substrate for growth without drawing nutrients directly from the living tissues of the plant.

The biology of Flavoparmelia is based on a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and photosynthetic algae. The lichen gains its energy from sunlight and absorbs moisture, minerals, and nitrogen directly from the atmosphere and rainfall. It does not actively damage the tree's vascular system, making its presence a neutral rather than parasitic interaction.

The symptoms of colonization include the appearance of flat, lobed, yellow-green to gray-green patches on the trunks and branches. These patches are firmly attached to the bark. Their presence is often a biological indicator of slow tree growth or a stagnant environment with high humidity, which prevents the tree from naturally shedding bark effectively.

Conditions favoring the spread of Flavoparmelia include high moisture levels, poor light penetration, and restricted air movement within the canopy. Old, stressed, or neglected trees with rough, thick bark are the most common hosts, as these surfaces provide the stability and humidity required for the lichen to thrive.

While the lichen itself is not a primary pathogen, it is considered an indirect threat in commercial orchards. The layer of lichen can create a microhabitat that provides shelter for overwintering pests, such as scale insects or spider mites. Furthermore, heavy colonization can inhibit gas exchange through the bark lenticels, potentially contributing to the decline of weak trees.
