Flexibacteriosis is a bacterial plant disease attributed to the Flexibacteriales order, which consists of glided bacteria known for their motile nature. These pathogens are opportunistic and typically cause soft rot in various tissues, causing the plant structures to collapse and decay. As gram-negative bacteria, they interact directly with plant cells, secreting enzymes that degrade cell walls and cause tissue maceration.

This disease primarily affects a broad range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Vegetable crops grown under high humidity, such as potatoes, cabbages, and various leafy greens, are particularly vulnerable. The bacteria often infiltrate plants through wounds caused by pruning, insect damage, or environmental stressors, making high-maintenance commercial farming environments highly susceptible to infection outbreaks.

Early symptoms include watery, translucent lesions that progress rapidly across the leaf blade or stem surface. As the infection deepens, the tissue turns soft, discolored, and often emits a strong, foul odor characteristic of bacterial decay. Eventually, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to systemic wilting and total collapse of the infected plant parts.

The development of flexibacteriosis is heavily dependent on moisture. Prolonged periods of high humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C provide an ideal environment for rapid bacterial multiplication. The pathogen is often spread through contaminated irrigation water, tools that have not been sterilized, and infected soil, where the bacteria can survive for several seasons in dormant states.

To effectively manage the disease, a multi-faceted approach is required. Preventive measures are the most critical, including strictly maintaining optimal irrigation levels, ensuring proper ventilation in greenhouses to reduce surface moisture, and disinfecting all agricultural machinery. Because bacterial infections move quickly, removing symptomatic plants immediately upon detection is essential to curb the spread of the pathogen to neighboring crops.
