Fusarium brasiliense is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex, primarily known for causing ear rot in maize. This pathogen has significant economic implications for agriculture, as it impacts both the quantity and the safety of the harvested grain due to potential mycotoxin contamination.

The primary host for this fungus is maize. Infection typically occurs during the flowering stage, where the fungus enters the plant through the silks. It can also infect the plant via systemic movement or through wounds created by insects, such as the European corn borer, which provide direct entry points for the pathogen.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of white, pink, or reddish fungal growth on the kernels. As the infection progresses, the kernels become discolored, light, and brittle. In severe cases, the entire ear may rot, and the silk may remain attached even when the husk begins to dry prematurely.
