Description
Fusarium falciforme is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Fusarium solani species complex. It is a significant soil-borne pathogen responsible for severe vascular wilt and root rot in a wide range of economically important crops, including legumes, vegetables, and perennial plants. Due to its ability to persist in the soil for long periods, it is a persistent challenge for modern agriculture.
The host range is remarkably broad, affecting plants such as soybeans, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and various woody ornamental plants. The pathogen typically enters the plant through the root system, often exploiting wounds caused by nematodes or improper cultivation practices, eventually colonizing the vascular tissues and disrupting water and nutrient flow.
Common symptoms of infection include chlorosis, wilting of the foliage, stunt in growth, and necrosis of the root and crown tissues. In many cases, a diagnostic sign is the vascular browning visible in a cross-section of the stem or root. Under high humidity, the fungus may produce characteristic white to pinkish mycelium on the surface of infected parts.
The development and spread of Fusarium falciforme are favored by warm temperatures, typically ranging from 22°C to 28°C, and moist soil conditions. The pathogen produces hardy chlamydospores that allow it to remain dormant in the soil, resisting environmental stress, chemical disinfectants, and lack of host plants for several years.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Key strategies include:
- Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles.
- Ensuring proper soil drainage and aeration.
- Treating seeds with appropriate fungicides.
- Managing soil pests such as nematodes that facilitate entry.
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
