The causative agent of this disease is Fusarium flocciferum, a species within the Fusarium genus. This fungus is known for its ability to survive in soil for extended periods as saprophytes, waiting for suitable host tissues to colonize. It is a persistent soil-borne pathogen that poses a consistent challenge to agricultural production.
The host range of Fusarium flocciferum is broad, including cereals, potatoes, legumes, and various greenhouse vegetables. The pathogen is opportunistic, meaning it often targets plants already stressed by environmental factors, poor soil health, or damage from pests such as nematodes or root-feeding insects.
Key symptoms include root rot, stem base necrosis, and sudden wilting of the foliage. In advanced stages, the internal stem tissues show browning or vascular discoloration, indicating that the fungus is restricting water and nutrient uptake. Under high humidity, a fluffy white or pinkish mycelial growth can often be seen on the affected parts of the plant.
Development and spread are primarily driven by soil moisture levels and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores (macroconidia and microconidia) that can be spread by irrigation water, rain splash, and movement of contaminated soil particles. Overwintering occurs primarily in the soil on infected organic matter, making sanitation a critical component of disease management.
The damage caused by Fusarium flocciferum leads to reduced stand density, stunted growth, and significant yield losses. Effective management strategies involve a holistic approach: rotating crops with non-host species, improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, and applying effective seed treatments to protect seedlings during the critical germination phase. Regular monitoring of fields is essential for early detection.
