The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium fujikuroi, an ascomycete pathogen responsible for the condition commonly known as Bakanae disease. The characteristic symptom of infection is the abnormal elongation of rice seedlings, which appear pale, thin, and significantly taller than healthy plants. This excessive growth is triggered by gibberellins, hormones produced by the fungus.
