Description
The causative agent of the disease is the microscopic fungus Fusarium lutulatum, a member of the diverse Fusarium genus. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause severe vascular wilt by colonizing the xylem of host plants. The fungus persists in the soil for extended periods due to its hardy chlamydospores, which allow it to withstand adverse environmental conditions.
Fusarium lutulatum affects a wide range of crops, including cereals, legumes, and various horticultural plants. It primarily attacks the root system, entering through natural openings or physical wounds. Once inside the plant, the fungus proliferates within the water-conducting tissues, effectively cutting off the supply of water and nutrients to the upper parts of the plant.
Early symptoms of infection include yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, often starting on one side of the plant. As the disease progresses, the entire plant may collapse. A key diagnostic feature is the distinct browning or discoloration of the vascular ring inside the stems or roots. Under high humidity, a cottony white or pinkish mycelial growth may appear on the base of the stem.
Development and spread of the disease are strongly favored by warm soil temperatures and high moisture levels. Fusarium lutulatum is primarily disseminated via infected seeds, contaminated farm equipment, and irrigation water. The persistence of the pathogen in the soil makes it a significant challenge for growers, as it can remain in a field long after a susceptible crop has been harvested.
The impact of this disease can be devastating, resulting in significant yield loss and economic damage. Successful management requires an integrated approach that includes crop rotation, soil sanitation, and the use of certified disease-free seed. Furthermore, applying systemic fungicides as seed treatments is critical to protecting seedlings from early infection during the vulnerable germination phase.
