Description

The fungus Fusarium poae is a primary causative agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereal crops. It belongs to the genus Fusarium and is a serious pathogen that negatively impacts cereal production worldwide by infecting heads, stems, and kernels, leading to significant yield losses and quality deterioration.

This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily infecting small grains including wheat, barley, rye, oats, and triticale. It is a soil-borne and residue-borne fungus that survives on infected stubble, crop debris, and in the soil, ready to infect susceptible hosts whenever environmental conditions are favorable.

The most common symptoms include premature bleaching of spikelets or the entire ear, which becomes clearly visible shortly after anthesis. In humid conditions, a characteristic powdery or cottony growth, which can appear white, pink, or orange, develops at the base of the glumes. The resulting grains are often shriveled, discolored, and light in weight.

The development of Fusarium poae is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Warm, rainy weather during the flowering stage is ideal for the fungus to sporulate and infect the spikes. High humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C facilitate the rapid germination of spores and colonization of the plant tissue.

The economic impact of this disease is two-fold: direct reduction in grain weight and yield, and indirect economic loss due to the production of mycotoxins. These toxic secondary metabolites, such as nivalenol, pose severe health risks to humans and livestock, leading to grain rejection at elevators and significant financial penalties for producers.

Integrated management practices are essential to minimize infection:

  • Selection of resistant or less susceptible cereal varieties.
  • Crop rotation with non-host crops to reduce the primary inoculum in the field.
  • Tillage practices that promote the rapid decomposition of infected crop residue.
  • Application of systemic fungicides at the appropriate growth stage, usually during flowering.
  • Seed treatment to protect seedlings from soil-borne inoculum.
