Description
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium solani-melongenae, a persistent soil-borne pathogen. It is a specialized fungal strain that invades the vascular system of plants, specifically targeting the xylem. By colonizing the conductive tissues, the fungus restricts the movement of water and nutrients, which inevitably leads to the decline of the host plant.
The disease primarily affects eggplant crops, although it can impact other members of the Solanaceae family. The fungus is highly resilient, capable of persisting in the soil for several years through the production of chlamydospores. These structures allow the pathogen to survive harsh environmental conditions and remain viable until a suitable host is replanted.
Initial symptoms include the yellowing of lower leaves and a noticeable loss of turgor, often becoming more pronounced during the heat of the day. As the disease progresses, the wilting becomes permanent, and the plant eventually collapses. A definitive sign of the infection is the browning or darkening of the vascular bundles visible upon slicing the stems near the root collar.
The development of the fungus is favored by warm soil temperatures (typically 22–28°C) and high moisture levels. Poor sanitation in greenhouse facilities often leads to rapid outbreaks. Furthermore, the pathogen can be disseminated through contaminated irrigation water, infested soil clinging to tools, or infected nursery transplants.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it can lead to devastating crop losses. Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the infection cycle:
- Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles (4+ years) with non-host crops.
- Using sterilized soil or high-quality peat-based substrates for seedling production.
- Applying systemic fungicides as a preventative root drench in high-risk areas.
- Controlling root-knot nematodes, which create infection courts for the fungus.
- Prompt removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the inoculum level.
