Description

The causative agent of this disease is the soil-borne fungus Fusarium tucumaniae, a member of the Fusarium solani species complex. This pathogen specifically targets the vascular tissue and root structure of host plants, severely impairing the uptake of essential moisture and mineral nutrients required for plant development.

The primary host for Fusarium tucumaniae is soybean (Glycine max). The disease is particularly problematic in intensive soybean-producing regions, where continuous cropping cycles lead to an increased density of fungal inoculum in the soil, exacerbating the impact on plant health.

Symptoms of the infection include brown lesions on the taproot and lateral roots, which eventually coalesce and result in root decay. In advanced stages, the root cortex sloughs off.
