Description
Fusarium udum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for the devastating Fusarium wilt disease in pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan). This pathogen acts as a vascular parasite, colonizing the xylem tissue of the host plant and significantly impeding the translocation of essential water and nutrients.
The host range is primarily limited to pigeon pea, where the fungus persists in the soil through resilient chlamydospores. These resting structures allow the pathogen to survive for several years even in the absence of a host crop, making it a persistent challenge in areas where pigeon pea is grown intensively.
Diagnostic symptoms include leaf yellowing (chlorosis), wilting of foliage, and eventually total plant collapse. A key internal indicator is the distinct browning or darkening of the vascular tissue within the stem and roots, which can be easily observed by making a cross-section of the plant base.
Environmental conditions such as high soil temperatures (25–30°C) and moisture fluctuations create an optimal climate for disease progression. The fungus enters through the root system, often aided by soil-dwelling nematodes or mechanical injuries, and spreads systemically throughout the plant's vascular system.
Economic losses due to Fusarium udum can be catastrophic if not managed properly. Effective disease management strategies include:
- Cultivation of resistant or tolerant pigeon pea varieties;
- Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles;
- Ensuring proper field drainage to prevent localized waterlogging;
- Application of bio-control agents such as Trichoderma species to suppress fungal growth.
