Description
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is a destructive fungal disease of soybeans caused by the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium virguliforme. This fungus colonizes the root system and crown, producing toxins that are transported to the leaves, resulting in systemic necrosis and plant death.
The primary crop affected by this pathogen is soybean. While the fungus can infect roots of other legumes, it causes the most severe economic losses in soybean fields, acting as one of the most critical threats to sustainable production in many agro-climatic zones.
Symptoms typically begin as scattered yellow spots between leaf veins, which expand into large necrotic areas, while the leaf veins remain green. As the disease progresses, infected plants shed their leaves but retain their petioles. Examining the internal crown and taproot tissues reveals a distinct, dark brown discoloration caused by fungal colonization.
The development of the fungus is favored by cool, wet weather conditions early in the growing season. The pathogen survives in the soil as chlamydospores, which allow it to persist for several years in the absence of a host. Dissemination occurs primarily through the movement of infested soil by farm machinery and water runoff.
Yield loss due to SDS can be devastating, sometimes exceeding 50% in heavily infested fields. Management strategies focus on selecting resistant varieties, optimizing planting dates to avoid early-season cold stress, improving soil drainage, and utilizing effective seed treatment fungicides to protect seedlings during the critical establishment phase.
