Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Gaeumannomyces avenae, which is a significant soil-borne pathogen affecting various cereals. It primarily attacks the root system and the base of the stem, interfering with the plant's vascular tissues and preventing the efficient uptake of water and nutrients.
Primary hosts for this pathogen include oats, wheat, and barley, as well as many grass species. The fungus is highly persistent and can survive as a saprophyte on crop debris in the soil for several seasons, making it a major threat in fields where cereals are grown continuously without adequate crop rotation.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the browning and eventual blackening of roots, which becomes brittle and starts to rot. A characteristic black fungal mycelium can often be found at the base of the stems.
