Description

Ganoderma rot is a serious fungal disease caused by various species of the order Ganodermatales. These fungi act as wood-decay agents, primarily targeting the heartwood and sapwood of living trees. By breaking down lignin and cellulose, the fungus severely compromises the structural integrity of the plant, often leading to sudden tree failure or long-term decline.

The disease affects a wide range of woody hosts, including ornamental trees like oaks and elms, as well as essential orchard crops such as fruit trees. The infection typically initiates at the root system or the base of the trunk. Pathogens usually enter through wounds caused by human activity, frost cracks, or natural decay sites where bark protection has been breached.

The most diagnostic sign of this infection is the presence of shelf-like, woody fruiting bodies (conks) emerging from the base of the trunk or root collar. Internally, the tree experiences white rot, which turns the wood soft, spongy, and light in color. Canopy symptoms include yellowing leaves, early leaf drop, and dieback of smaller twigs as the tree struggles to transport nutrients.

Favorable conditions for Ganoderma development include high humidity, poor soil drainage, and existing stress factors such as drought or insect infestation. The fungus produces spores that can be distributed by wind or splashing water, while mycelial growth persists in soil debris for many years, acting as a reservoir for recurring infections in orchards or forest plots.

Management strategies focus on prevention, as curative treatments for advanced internal rot are non-existent. Key steps include maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, protecting the root zone from compaction, and practicing sterile pruning techniques. If a tree is identified with advanced symptoms, it should be removed along with as much of the root system as possible to mitigate the risk to healthy neighboring trees.
