The disease is caused by the fungus Gliocephalotrichum nephelii, a significant pathogen associated with various tropical fruits. It is classified as an opportunistic fungal invader that thrives primarily on harvested produce. Its ability to proliferate rapidly makes it a major concern for the agricultural industry in regions where tropical fruit production is intensive.

The primary host for this pathogen is the rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), which frequently suffers from fruit rot during shipping and storage. The fungus can also affect other related Sapindaceae species. Its presence in orchards is often unnoticed until the fruit begins to reach maturity, at which point the pathogen becomes highly aggressive, colonizing both the peel and the pulp.

Symptoms typically begin as small, discolored spots on the fruit skin that rapidly expand. Within a few days, the affected area becomes depressed and necrotic, eventually becoming covered with a distinctive, often pinkish or grayish fungal growth. If left unmanaged, the infection spreads to neighboring fruits, leading to mass decay in storage crates.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of Gliocephalotrichum nephelii. High humidity and warm temperatures provide the perfect medium for spore germination and mycelial expansion.
