Gloeocercospora leaf spot is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Gloeocercospora sorghi. This disease is recognized globally as a significant issue in sorghum production, known colloquially as zonate leaf spot or red leaf spot. It damages the foliage of the plant, directly impacting photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant vigor.
The primary host for this fungus is sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), including grain, forage, and sweet sorghum varieties. In some agricultural regions, it can also infect maize and various wild grass species, which serve as alternative hosts, helping the fungus survive in the absence of the primary crop.
Symptoms typically begin as small, water-soaked lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often forming characteristic target-like patterns or elongated reddish-purple streaks. Under high humidity, a pinkish, gelatinous mass consisting of fungal spores often becomes visible on the surface of the lesions.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle. The pathogen thrives in warm, humid climates and is primarily spread by splashing rain and wind currents. The fungus overwinters in crop residues, soil, and on contaminated seeds, becoming active once the temperature and moisture levels are suitable for conidial germination.
Effective disease management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to utilize crop rotation, avoid continuous planting of susceptible varieties, and ensure the destruction of infected plant debris through deep plowing. Furthermore, using treated high-quality seeds and applying foliar fungicides during peak humidity periods can significantly reduce the severity of the outbreak.
