The host range includes various pasture grasses such as ryegrass and fescue, as well as significant cereal crops like wheat and barley. Infection occurs primarily through the flowers, where the fungal spores land on the stigma, germinate, and penetrate the developing seed tissues.

The visual signs of the disease are often subtle until harvest. While the plant may appear healthy, the spikes contain hardened, dark-colored sclerotia instead of viable kernels.
