Description
Grapevine enation is a viral disease affecting grapevines, often associated with the Grapevine enation disease virus and other nepoviruses. It is a systemic infection that disrupts the normal vascular functions of the vine, leading to significant physiological impairments.
The disease primarily affects Vitis vinifera varieties. The virus can remain latent within the plant for extended periods, meaning the vine may act as a silent reservoir of the infection, posing a high risk to other plants in the vineyard before clear symptoms become visible.
The most distinctive symptom is the development of enations—small, ridge-like outgrowths—on the underside of the leaves, typically extending along the main veins. Leaves often display significant deformation, crinkling, and asymmetry. Affected vines may also show stunted growth, shortened internodes, and reduced overall vigor.
Transmission occurs primarily through the use of infected grafting material and via soil-borne nematodes of the genus Xiphinema. These vectors feed on the roots of infected vines and transmit the virus to healthy ones, making the disease difficult to manage once it has established itself in the soil.
The economic impact of grapevine enation is severe due to yield loss and reduced fruit quality. Since there are no chemical treatments to cure infected vines, management focuses on prevention. This includes strict adherence to nursery certification programs, the removal and destruction of infected vines, and soil testing for nematode populations to prevent future outbreaks.
