Description
Green crinkle is a significant viral disease affecting apple trees, caused by a complex of viruses, most notably the Apple green crinkle associated virus. This pathogen disrupts normal fruit development, leading to serious economic losses due to the total loss of marketability of the affected crop.
The primary host of this disease is the domesticated apple tree (Malus domestica). Once a tree is infected, the virus becomes systemic, spreading through the phloem to all parts of the plant, including branches and buds, ensuring the tree remains infected for its entire life cycle.
The hallmark symptoms of Green crinkle appear on the fruit as irregular, deep depressions, grooves, and a shriveled appearance. These malformations are often accompanied by stunted fruit growth, and internally, the flesh underneath the depressions may become corky or woody, rendering the apple inedible.
Environmental conditions do not directly trigger the disease, as its spread is primarily anthropogenic. The main mode of transmission is through grafting or budding using infected scion wood. Because there are no known insect vectors for this specific virus, the nursery industry plays a critical role in controlling its movement.
Management of Green crinkle is entirely preventative, as there are no curative treatments for viral infections in fruit trees. Growers must rely on using certified virus-free rootstocks and scion wood, implementing strict sanitation protocols for pruning tools, and immediately removing and destroying symptomatic trees to protect the rest of the orchard.
