Description

Onion greening, often associated with phytoplasma infections or onion yellows, is a systemic disease caused by obligate parasitic microorganisms. These pathogens reside within the plant phloem, systematically disrupting the translocation of nutrients and photosynthesis products throughout the onion or garlic plant.

The primary hosts affected by this condition are onion and garlic crops. While the disease is well-documented, it remains a significant challenge for farmers worldwide, as the infected plants exhibit stunted growth patterns and drastically reduced yields, making the infected bulbs commercially unviable.

Symptoms typically manifest as leaf chlorosis starting from the tips and progressing downward. One of the most distinctive features of the condition is the abnormal greening of inflorescences and distorted scape development, which contrasts sharply with the healthy morphological structure of the plant.

The spread of the disease is predominantly facilitated by insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers. These insects feed on the plant sap, transmitting the phytoplasma from wild weed reservoirs or infected crops to healthy ones. The prevalence of the disease is heavily dictated by the density of vector populations and the timing of their migratory patterns.
