Description
Griphosphaeria is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for significant bark and woody tissue diseases in various trees. The most common species, Griphosphaeria corticola, acts as a necrotrophic pathogen that primarily affects the cortical layers of stems and branches. If left untreated, the infection disrupts vascular transport, leading to the gradual decline of the host tree.
The primary host range includes members of the Rosaceae family, with apple and pear trees being the most susceptible. The fungus typically exploits entry points such as pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by environmental stress. By colonizing these vulnerable spots, the mycelium spreads into the healthy tissue, causing localized necrotic lesions that weaken the structural integrity of the branch.
Symptoms are characterized by sunken, discolored patches on the bark, which can range from tan to dark brown. As the disease progresses, the bark becomes brittle and may start to peel or crack. Upon close inspection, small fruiting bodies (perithecia) of the fungus appear as tiny black dots on the surface of the lesions, especially during humid weather conditions.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the disease cycle, with high humidity and moderate temperatures being the most conducive for spore germination. The fungus overwinters in infected bark tissue and releases spores during wet periods, allowing for secondary infections throughout the growing season. Orchard hygiene is essential, as debris left on the ground serves as a reservoir for further spread.
Effective management and protection against this pathogen include the following strategies:
- Rigorous pruning of infected limbs, cutting back into healthy tissue to remove all signs of necrosis.
- Application of copper-based fungicides to protect pruning cuts and overall bark surfaces.
- Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation to reduce susceptibility.
- Regular inspections to detect early symptoms of bark degradation and minimize the buildup of inoculum.
