Gum pocket and gummy pitting are physiological disorders affecting citrus fruits, characterized by the accumulation of gum within the fruit tissues. This condition is primarily categorized as non-pathogenic, meaning it is not caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria, but rather by internal metabolic disruption during the fruit development stage.
These disorders commonly affect a variety of Citrus species, particularly sweet oranges and certain mandarin hybrids. The symptoms often appear as the fruit approaches maturity, manifesting as depressions or pits on the fruit surface and the formation of cavities filled with a viscous, gum-like substance within the albedo.
The primary symptom is the localized breakdown of internal cells, which leads to the secretion of gum. This not only impairs the external aesthetic of the fruit but also compromises the integrity of the peel, making the fruit susceptible to secondary pathogens and reducing its marketability and shelf life.
The development of these disorders is strongly linked to environmental stress, particularly abrupt fluctuations in soil moisture and temperature. Inconsistent irrigation, especially following drought periods, causes rapid water uptake that creates structural tension within the developing rind, leading to the formation of gum pockets.
