Description
The Gummy bark disease is a significant viral disorder primarily affecting citrus cultivars, particularly sweet orange trees grafted onto sour orange rootstock. It causes structural damage to the bark and wood tissues, leading to severe decline in tree vitality and productivity over time.
The causative agent of gummy bark is associated with the citrus psorosis complex of viruses and viroids. The pathogen is systemic, meaning it colonizes the entire plant vascular system, making localized treatment ineffective. Transmission occurs predominantly through the use of infected budwood during grafting and propagation processes.
Clinical signs of the disease appear as depressions and distinct grooves on the bark of the trunk and primary branches. When the bark is scraped or cut, brown, gummy deposits are observed in the cambium layer. These symptoms are often accompanied by general tree weakness, leading to a reduced canopy and eventual dieback of the affected limbs.
- Formation of shallow longitudinal grooves on the bark.
- Accumulation of amber-colored gum in wood tissues.
- Foliar chlorosis and sparse canopy density.
- Significant reduction in fruit size and yield.
- Premature senescence and death of the plant.
Environmental conditions do not directly cause the disease, but they influence the speed of symptom expression. Stress factors, such as water deficit or extreme temperature fluctuations, can exacerbate the damage caused by the pathogen. However, the primary mechanism of spread remains human-mediated, specifically through improper nursery practices and contaminated pruning tools.
Management of Gummy bark is strictly preventative, as there is no cure for infected trees. The most critical step is the use of virus-free, certified nursery stock for all new plantings. Regularly sanitizing pruning equipment with specialized disinfectants is essential to stop mechanical transmission. Once a tree displays visible symptoms, it should be removed and destroyed to protect the rest of the orchard.
