Description

The causal agent of this disease is the rust fungus Gymnosporangium cornutum. This pathogen is heteroecious, meaning it requires two unrelated host species to complete its life cycle: common juniper (Juniperus communis) and mountain ash or rowan (Sorbus spp.).

Symptoms appear on rowan leaves in early summer as bright orange-yellow spots on the upper surface. By late summer, distinctive brown, horn-shaped aecia develop on the undersides of the leaves. These structures release spores that are carried by the wind specifically to infect nearby juniper trees.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity and mild temperatures in the spring are optimal for spore germination and colonization of host tissue. Wind dispersal ensures the pathogen can spread rapidly across a landscape if both hosts are present.

The impact of the rust infection is significant, causing premature defoliation and weakening of the rowan trees. Chronic infections lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted branch growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and environmental stress, ultimately lowering the tree's ornamental and ecological value.

Management and prevention focus on interrupting the fungus's life cycle. Practical strategies include:

  • avoiding the planting of junipers and rowan trees in close proximity;
  • regular inspection and pruning of infected juniper branches where the fungus overwinters;
  • removal and destruction of fallen leaves to reduce the primary inoculum in the soil;
  • application of appropriate fungicides during the susceptible growth stages of the rowan.
