Description

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Gymnosporangium unicorne, which belongs to the order Pucciniales. This pathogen is a heteroecious rust fungus, meaning it requires two unrelated plant hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle.

The primary host is typically species of Juniperus, where the fungus overwinters in the woody tissues of the plant. During the spring season, the fungus produces specialized fruiting structures that release spores capable of infecting susceptible plants, particularly those in the Rosaceae family.

Visual symptoms on junipers include visible swellings, distorted branches, and the formation of brownish-orange telial horns during moist spring weather. These fungal structures eventually release spores that are carried by the wind to find new susceptible plant hosts, perpetuating the disease cycle.

The development of the fungus is strictly regulated by environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures during the sporulation phase. Extended periods of rain facilitate the swelling of the telial galls, allowing the fungus to disseminate its spores across the garden environment effectively.

Economic and decorative damage is significant, as severe infections can lead to branch dieback and general plant decline. Management strategies involve:

  • pruning and disposing of infected branches to reduce inoculum load;
  • applying systemic fungicides containing triazoles or copper-based treatments;
  • maintaining proper spacing between host plants to minimize the risk of cross-infection.
