The Hapalopilaceae family consists of basidiomycete fungi primarily recognized as wood-decay agents. These fungi play a complex role in ecosystems as decomposers, but in agricultural and forestry contexts, they are classified as pathogens that compromise the structural integrity of both living trees and woody debris.

Various deciduous and coniferous tree species, including commercial orchard fruit trees, are susceptible to infection by these fungi. The pathogens typically gain access to the host through compromised bark, unhealed pruning wounds, or environmental damage such as frost cracks, allowing the fungal mycelium to penetrate deeper into the woody tissue.

Symptoms of colonization include the appearance of distinct fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches, often characterized by a soft or corky texture. Management strategies focus on preventive care, including rigorous sanitation practices and the protection of exposed wood surfaces. Key actions include pruning diseased wood back to healthy tissue, sealing wounds with appropriate wound dressings, and maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced nutrition and pest control, which reduces the tree's susceptibility to opportunistic fungal pathogens.
