Haptocillium is a genus of fungi that includes various species involved in complex ecological interactions, including mycoparasitism and plant-associated infections. Within the field of plant pathology, understanding the behavior of this genus is essential for managing soil-borne diseases that can negatively impact agricultural production in both greenhouses and open fields.

The causative agent belongs to the genus Haptocillium, known for its ability to persist in the environment. These fungi act as opportunists, taking advantage of vulnerable host plants. They disseminate primarily through fungal spores (conidia) which are easily spread by irrigation water, contaminated tools, or infested planting material within the cultivation area.

A wide range of horticultural and field crops can be affected by these pathogens. Plants grown in high-density environments or under suboptimal conditions are particularly susceptible. The disease progress depends heavily on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and soil temperature, which facilitate the colonization of plant tissues.

Symptoms often manifest as systemic growth inhibition and localized necrosis. Because the infection frequently occurs in the root zone, the visible signs often mimic nutrient deficiencies or dehydration. Key indicators of the presence of the pathogen include:

  • Yellowing and wilting of foliage, starting from the lower leaves.
  • Browning and decay of the root cortex.
  • Development of a sparse, powdery spore layer on infected debris.
  • Stunted plant growth and reduced vigor in early developmental stages.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pathogen. Preventive measures include strict sanitation practices, such as removing crop debris, implementing crop rotation to break the infection cycle, and improving soil drainage. Biological control agents, such as specific strains of Trichoderma, can also be utilized to suppress the growth of the pathogen in the rhizosphere.
