Description
Helicobasidiosis is a severe fungal disease caused by the soil-borne pathogen Helicobasidium longisporum. This fungus primarily attacks the root systems of various agricultural plants, disrupting nutrient uptake and leading to the eventual death of the host plant due to decay of the subterranean organs.
The host range is broad, including significant commercial crops such as sugar beets, carrots, alfalfa, clover, and various tree nursery seedlings. The disease is characterized by its ability to spread rapidly in patches within a field, making early detection and localized control measures essential for preventing widespread losses.
Symptoms of an active infection include the formation of a distinct violet or purple mycelial mat on the surface of roots and root crops. As the infection progresses, the tissues of the root system turn dark, become soft, and lose their integrity, which is visually reflected in the wilting and chlorosis of the above-ground foliage.
The development of Helicobasidium longisporum is heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high soil moisture content. The fungus survives in the soil through sclerotia and dormant mycelium, which can remain viable for several years. Poor drainage and soil compaction are primary environmental factors that promote the spread and severity of the disease.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. The most critical control method is the implementation of long-term crop rotation to starve the pathogen. Additionally, agronomists should focus on improving soil drainage, balancing soil pH through liming to avoid acidic conditions, and using certified, disease-free planting material to minimize the introduction of the fungus into clean fields.
