Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Helicoceras oryzae, a pathogenic organism responsible for leaf spot symptoms in rice crops. This fungus belongs to the group of mitosporic fungi that significantly affect plant physiology by disrupting photosynthesis through the development of necrotic lesions on various aerial parts of the crop.
The primary host for this fungus is rice (Oryza sativa). It attacks all developmental stages of the plant, starting from seeds and seedlings to mature vegetative and reproductive organs. When the infection occurs in the early stages, it can lead to seedling blight, which severely reduces plant density in the field and impacts overall crop stand establishment.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of brown, oval-shaped spots on leaves, which often feature a light center and a darker border. Under conditions of high humidity, these lesions become covered with a dark olive-colored sporulation layer. As the infection progresses, the leaves curl and wither, leading to severe chlorosis and early senescence of the foliage.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Helicoceras oryzae. Extended periods of high humidity, excessive moisture, and temperatures within the range of 25–30°C provide an ideal environment for spore germination and infection. The pathogen persists in soil and crop debris, spreading through wind-borne conidia and irrigation water.
The economic impact of the disease is linked to reduced grain filling and weight, ultimately resulting in significant yield losses. Effective management practices should focus on:
- Selection of resistant or tolerant rice varieties.
- Seed treatment with appropriate fungicides to prevent early-stage infection.
- Improvement of soil fertility, particularly the balanced application of potassium.
- Removal and destruction of crop residues to reduce primary inoculum.
- Application of foliar fungicides during the vegetative stage if environmental conditions favor disease spread.
