The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Helminthosporium papulosum, also scientifically recognized as Stigmina papulosa. This pathogen is responsible for a condition often referred to as "bark spot" or ulcerous bark disease, which primarily impacts the epidermal and cortical tissues of fruit trees, leading to localized necrosis.

The primary host for this fungus is the apple tree. While it can affect mature trees, it is particularly problematic in young orchards and nurseries. The environmental conditions often found in high-density nursery systems provide a conducive environment for the fungus to establish and proliferate rapidly across young, tender bark.

Symptoms initially appear as small, raised, circular or irregular spots on the bark of young branches. As the infection progresses, these spots develop into distinctive ulcers. A notable feature is the small, black, fruiting body of the fungus located in the center of the lesion. Severe infections result in bark cracking, which disrupts the transport of nutrients and can lead to the eventual dieback of infected twigs.

High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are the primary drivers of disease development. The fungal spores (conidia) are dispersed by wind and rain splashes, allowing the pathogen to spread from overwintering sites on dead bark to healthy tissue. Poor orchard hygiene and dense canopy structures significantly exacerbate the risk of a disease outbreak.
