Description

Hemitrichia is a genus of slime molds (myxomycetes) that often appear in agricultural environments as unexpected surface colonizers. While they are generally saprotrophic, feeding on decaying organic matter, their presence on living plants can lead to physiological stress and potential crop quality degradation. These organisms are not true fungi but behave similarly in terms of environmental requirements, thriving in damp, nutrient-rich conditions.

The organism develops through a vegetative phase known as a plasmodium, which moves across surfaces, and a reproductive phase that produces fruiting bodies (sporangia). These structures are typically small, yellow, orange, or brownish, and can easily be mistaken for fungal disease outbreaks. They do not penetrate the plant cells in the same way parasitic fungi do, but rather encrust the surface.

Various crops, particularly those grown in high-humidity environments like greenhouses or under heavy mulch, are susceptible. Common targets include strawberries, leafy greens, tomato seedlings, and various ornamental plants. Any plant part that maintains prolonged contact with moist soil or decomposing debris provides an ideal surface for Hemitrichia to colonize.

Symptoms include the development of a slimy, gelatinous layer that eventually hardens into distinct, spore-bearing structures. This layer can physically obstruct stomata, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency and localized chlorosis. While the slime mold itself may not kill the plant, it significantly increases the risk of secondary pathogen infection, such as bacterial soft rot or gray mold, due to the trapped moisture underneath the colony.

Managing Hemitrichia involves improving environmental conditions and crop sanitation:

  • Enhance airflow through proper spacing and pruning;
  • Control irrigation to avoid prolonged surface wetness;
  • Apply organic or plastic mulch to break contact between the soil and the plant canopy;
  • Promptly remove decaying organic matter and crop residues;
  • Maintain low humidity levels within greenhouse structures.
As it is not a parasitic fungus, standard fungicides are often ineffective and unnecessary if cultural practices are properly managed.
