Description

Hemitrichia calyculata is a species of slime mold, belonging to the group of myxomycetes. While not a parasite that feeds on living plant tissues, its presence in greenhouses or open-field crops often serves as a biological indicator of poor environmental management, primarily excessive moisture and sanitation issues.

The organism develops from a plasmodium, which eventually transitions into distinct reproductive structures called sporangia. While it does not infect the plant internally, its surface growth can obstruct the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and gas exchange, effectively creating a barrier on leaves, stems, or fruits.

Visual symptoms include the appearance of small, bright yellow to ochre-colored, stalked, cup-like structures on decaying organic matter or moist plant surfaces. As the sporangia mature, they become dry and release powdery spores, which are easily dispersed by wind, water splashes, or even through the mechanical movement of workers and equipment.

Development is heavily favored by stagnant air, high humidity levels, and the presence of moist, decaying organic debris. It thrives in neglected sections of greenhouses, under benches, or in soil surfaces covered with non-decomposed mulch that retains too much moisture for extended periods.

Effective management focuses on environmental control and hygiene. Farmers should improve airflow, maintain proper drainage to eliminate standing water, and remove all decaying organic matter from the cultivation area. While fungicides can sometimes inhibit the development of sporangia, physical sanitation and moisture regulation remain the most sustainable prevention strategies.
