The Comb tooth fungus (Hericium clathroides) is a wood-decaying fungus often associated with the development of white rot. While primarily recognized for its role as a decomposer of dead wood, it can act as a stressor for living trees when colonization occurs on compromised or damaged wood tissue, eventually impacting the vitality of the host.

It predominantly infects hardwood species, including beech, oak, and birch, as well as various orchard trees. The pathogen typically gains entry into the tree through wounds, cracks in the bark, or pruning sites, which serve as the starting point for the colonization of the xylem tissue.

The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of distinctive, coral-like, branched fruit bodies on the bark of the host tree. Beneath the surface, the fungus actively secretes enzymes that break down lignin, leaving the wood in a characteristic white, bleached, and stringy state, which compromises the tree's structural integrity.

The development and dispersal of this fungus are heavily dependent on environmental humidity and temperature stability. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind currents and insects, allowing the fungus to colonize new hosts or expand its territory within an existing tree that has developed new points of injury.

The economic and ecological impact of this fungus lies in the gradual decline of the tree and the increased danger of structural failure. Proactive management strategies include:

  • Removal and destruction of heavily colonized wood tissues.
  • Sanitary pruning of dead or diseased branches to reduce infection sites.
  • Application of specialized sealants to wounds and accidental injuries on trunks.
