Huanglongbing, commonly referred to as citrus greening, is considered the most serious disease affecting citrus crops worldwide. It is caused by fastidious bacteria of the genus Candidatus Liberibacter, which primarily infect the phloem tissues of the host plant, preventing the distribution of essential nutrients.
The disease affects all species and varieties within the Citrus genus. It is transmitted primarily by the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) or the African citrus psyllid (Trioza erytreae). These insects acquire the bacteria while feeding on infected plants and subsequently transmit the pathogen to healthy trees through their saliva.
Key indicators of infection include blotchy mottling of leaves, which often shows an asymmetrical pattern across the leaf blade. As the disease advances, trees exhibit significant canopy thinning, stunted growth, and small, misshapen fruit. A characteristic sign of fruit infection is the failure of the fruit to ripen evenly, often retaining a green color at the stem end.
Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction of psyllids also accelerate the spread of Huanglongbing. Because the bacteria reside deep within the vascular tissue of the tree, there is no known cure for infected trees. Consequently, orchard management must prioritize prevention over remediation to maintain productivity.
