Phytoplasma-associated huanglongbing

Huanglongbing symptoms associated with phytoplasmas

Description

Phytoplasma-associated huanglongbing (HLB) is a severe condition affecting citrus trees, triggered by the infection of phloem tissue with specialized microorganisms known as phytoplasmas. While often confused with the bacterial form caused by Candidatus Liberibacter, this variant also causes systemic damage by disrupting the translocation of carbohydrates, leading to severe nutritional deficiencies and tree decline.

The host range includes all major species within the Citrus genus, including commercial varieties like sweet orange, lemon, lime, and pomelo. The disease can persist in other rutaceous plants, which may serve as asymptomatic reservoirs, making it difficult to eradicate the pathogen from agricultural landscapes once it is established.

Symptoms are distinct and progressive. The hallmark sign is blotchy mottle chlorosis, where leaf tissue becomes yellow while the veins remain green. This symptom is frequently mistaken for mineral deficiencies, particularly zinc. Affected trees exhibit sparse foliage, stunted growth, limb dieback, and produce small, misshapen, bitter-tasting fruit that fails to ripen properly.

Transmission occurs through sap-sucking insects, primarily psyllids, which acquire the phytoplasmas while feeding on infected phloem. Once the insect becomes infected, it remains a carrier for life and efficiently transmits the pathogen to healthy trees. The rate of spread is heavily influenced by the density of vector populations and the surrounding environmental conditions favoring insect movement.

Prevention and integrated pest management (IPM) are the only viable strategies against this disease. Producers must prioritize the use of pathogen-free certified nursery stock. Implementing rigorous vector control programs, regular orchard scouting for symptoms, and the swift removal and destruction of infected trees are essential steps to mitigate the spread of phytoplasma-associated HLB in citrus groves.
