Hypocrea is a genus of ascomycete fungi that are primarily recognized for their role in forest ecosystems, but certain species are known to cause damage to agricultural crops. While many are saprotrophic, some act as opportunistic pathogens, colonizing weakened plant tissues and contributing to various types of rot. In agronomy, Hypocrea is viewed as a threat that can complicate plant recovery from injuries or environmental stress.

The disease is caused by species of the genus Hypocrea, which are classified as necrotrophic pathogens. They primarily target the vascular and cortical tissues of plants. By secreting enzymes that break down plant cell walls, the fungus leads to the development of necrotic areas, which compromises the integrity of the stem, roots, or fruit, often leading to secondary infections by other microorganisms.

The range of affected crops includes fruit-bearing trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. It is particularly prevalent in environments with high plant density, such as greenhouses or professional nurseries. These environments often provide the microclimate necessary for the fungus to thrive on plants that are already stressed by improper irrigation, poor air circulation, or nutrient deficiencies.

Symptoms of a Hypocrea infection are characterized by the appearance of characteristic stromata — fungal fruiting bodies that look like small cushions or crusts. These structures can range in color from white and yellow to deep green. As the disease advances, the affected areas become soft, discolored, and eventually show signs of necrosis, leading to stunted growth and, in severe cases, the death of the branch or the entire plant.

Favorable conditions for the development and spread of the fungus include high humidity levels, persistent moisture on plant surfaces, and ambient temperatures that promote rapid fungal growth. The damage caused by the pathogen is significant, as it leads to reduced yields and loss of plant vigor. In nurseries, the ability of spores to spread via water splashing or contaminated tools makes it a difficult challenge to manage.

Effective management relies on a comprehensive approach to plant health. Primary prevention includes careful handling to avoid wounding the plants and ensuring adequate space between individuals to promote airflow. Chemical protection involves the application of appropriate fungicides, particularly after pruning or in high-risk weather conditions. Sanitation, specifically removing and destroying infected plant parts, is critical to preventing the spread of spores to healthy tissue.
