The fungus acts by producing conidia that attach to the cuticle of the insect host. Once the spores germinate, the hyphae penetrate the exoskeleton and begin to consume the insect from within. This biological interaction is characterized by the formation of distinctive stromata, which burst through the insect's cuticle to disperse new spores, effectively cycling the infection through a pest population.
This organism primarily targets pests on crops such as citrus, various ornamental plants, and tropical vegetation. By parasitizing these insects, Hypocrella prevents the mass development of sucking pests, thereby protecting the host plant from excessive sap depletion and the formation of sooty mold, which is often associated with the honeydew secreted by such insects.
